Welfare from Religious and Psychological Viewpoints

    Abstract:
The present paper, a section of the book entitled An Introduction to Positive Psychology, investigates the relation between religion and spirituality on the one hand and psychological welfare on the other. Spirituality refers to human's willingness for quest of the meaning of life through transcending his soul or through a relationship to something higher and greater than human himself. Religion is the focus of attention in this discussion, since it points at some form of spiritual quest and is related to formal and special customs and manners. In the writer's view, however, spirituality is not necessarily dependent on a religious context, but the relation between piety and mental-physical health may be related to factors which are, in their turn, resulted from piety. In the present paper, the researches related to the first six groups of these factors have been presented, of which the most important being origination of a sense of meaningfulness and purpose in life through piety. The most common way of achieving meaningfulness in life are studied here; among them are religious and spiritual experiences.
